SPLANG and connectivity in rural areas
Submarine cables are essential infrastructure in the world of international connectivity. They connect Guyana to global communications networks and guarantee a high-speed, low-latency connection, essential for the digital development of the territory.

AN ESSENTIAL CHALLENGE: REDUCING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE
Rural areas of Guyana, characterized by low population density and difficult geographic conditions, often lack connectivity. For residents of these regions, the lack of Internet access not only hampers their daily lives but also limits essential areas such as education, health, and economic development. SPLANG is mobilizing to make connectivity a right accessible to all, thus strengthening social cohesion and digital inclusion throughout Guyana.
TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS: OPTICAL FIBER, SATELLITE AND ALTERNATIVE TECHNOLOGIES
To connect rural areas, SPLANG uses different technologies adapted to the specificities of each region: 1. Public Initiative Networks (PIN) by Optical Fiber: SPLANG deploys fiber optic networks in areas where this is possible, thus offering high speeds and a stable connection. However, due to long distances and limited accessibility, optical fiber is often reserved for the densest areas. 2. Satellite Networks: For the most isolated regions, SPLANG offers satellite solutions, making it possible to overcome geographical constraints. Satellite connections are essential for reaching landlocked villages, providing them with basic internet access. 3. Wireless technologies and FTTO (Fiber to the Office): SPLANG also uses wireless solutions (WIFI and LTE) and FTTO, which make it possible to connect public structures (schools, town halls, health centers) to high-speed networks, in order to guarantee access to essential services in isolated areas.
INITIATIVES FOR DIGITAL INCLUSION
In addition to the deployment of technologies, SPLANG carries out awareness-raising and training activities in rural areas to encourage the adoption of digital tools and help residents take full advantage of them. These programs include digital initiation workshops for residents, help with online administrative procedures, and resources for young people.
IMPACT AND PROSPECTS
Thanks to the actions of SPLANG, several isolated villages in Guyana now benefit from better connectivity, facilitating access to distance education, online health care, and teleworking. Expanding digital coverage also contributes to the local economy, enabling local businesses to connect to regional and international markets. The long-term goal of SPLANG is to make connectivity in Guyana as uniform as possible, so that every resident can access the same opportunities, regardless of where they live. By mobilizing various technologies and adapting its solutions to local constraints, SPLANG continues to reduce the digital divide and encourage harmonious and inclusive development in all rural areas of Guyana.
